INDIAN FREEDOM STRUGGLE MEMORIAL @ GONIKOPPAL

Coorg was a class 'C' state in India until 1956 and it merged with Mysore state and is now a district of Karnataka and is called Kodagu.

Until Independence Coorg was ruled by the British as a separate entity under a Chief Commissioner.

As every where else in India a robust movement against the British was spear headed by Congress party in Kodagu

Prominent freedom fighters of Kodagu are Paruvangada Kushalappa, Pandyanda Bellippa, Kollimada Carumbaiah, Abdul Gaffar Khan (Not the Frontier Gandhi) Cheppudira Poonacha, Mallengada Chengappa, Checkera Monnaiah, Kakamada Nanaiah, Cheriyapanda Kushalappa, Malavanda Chengappa, Niddemane Somanna, Gundukutti Manjunathaiah

During the 80's the surviving Freedom fighters decided to construct a Memorial for the Freedom Struggle.
They decided to build an auditorium and Library which will be of use to the people of Kodagu in general and that of Gonikoppal in particular.

A trust was formed and construction of the auditorium started in 1999. The founder trustees were Sri Mallengada Chengappa as Chairman, Sri Kollimada Mandanna as Convenor and Sri J.A.Karumbaiah, Sri C.P.Belliappa, Sri A.C.Pooanacha, Sri C.B.Monnaiah and Sri Kakamada Nanaiah as members.

However the work stalled as the freedom fighters passed away one after another.

The surviving Trust members resolved to carry out the work of the Freedom Fighters and Sri C.P.Belliappa was elected as chairmand and Sri Kollimada Ajit Aiyappa S/o Sri K.C.Mandanna as Convener and the work restarted again.

It has been a painful and slow process as funds were not forthcoming.

But with support from philanthropic public and elected representatives work has restarted and the Auditorium part is almost complete and it is proposed to inaugurate the structure by January 2013.
The Auditorium can seat about 500 people and will be available for organizing Political, Religious and Cultural programs.
